My boyfriend and me were in a surf shop when I started listening to a woman talking about living in the Outer Banks. She said, "Once I moved to the Outer Banks, I was trying to figure out what is was about this place that made me so much happier. I love the water but I knew it had to be more than that. And then I realized - its because I have so much less. It's because I'm not worried about all of the material things."
Happy New Year!
On January 1st, my boyfriend me made the last minute decision to make the three and a half hour drive to the Outer Banks. We booked two Airbnbs. The first was on Roanoke Island in a town called Manteo. The second was in Kitty Hawk which was a short drive across the bridge into the Outer Banks. This was my first time going to the Outer Banks and it definitely didn't disappoint.
When we got to Manteo, we quickly realized that most places were closed for the first day of the new year. We decided to cross the bridge into the Outer Banks and go to the beach to see the sunset.
After seeing the sunset and spending some time on Yelp, we decided to have dinner at Jack Brown's Beer & Burger Joint in Kitty Hawk. The drive was only about 20 minutes from the Airbnb in Manteo. My boyfriend got a burger that we shared and we got the sweet potato fries and regular fries. The food was amazing!
Our Airbnb was a private room in someone's house which was our first time doing that. We decided on the Airbnb since it was only for one night but we ended up loving it. It was the perfect place to spend the night before heading to our next Airbnb in Kitty Hawk.
When we woke up, we couldn't check-in to the Airbnb until later in the day so we decided to go to Jockey's Ridge State Park. The park is 427 acres and home to the largest active sand dune in the Eastern United States. We spent a couple hours hiking through the sand dunes and watching people fly kites and hang glide.
After the sand dunes, we went to lunch at a sandwich shop called Waveriders Coffee & Deli. 100% recommend! I got the vegan chickpea burger and my boyfriend got the turkey and gouda. We paired it with some NC brewed beers.
The next day we went to Jennette's Pier in Nags Head which was a 20 minute drive from our Airbnb. We loved how close Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, and Kitty Hawk are to each other. We really got to explore the different parts of the Outer Banks. We went to go buy bait and the guys working told us we probably wouldn't be able to catch anything but a buzz. So we took their advice, bought some beers, and spent the afternoon not catching anything until right before the sun was about to go down...
After leaving the pier, we watched the sun go down and headed home to cook fresh seafood and produce that we bought from Carawan Seafood Co.
